LOSFA Opens Applications for the 2023 John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program

LOSFA Provides $84,000 in Repayment Relief to 15 Eligible State and Federal Public Defenders and State Prosecutors

Baton Rouge, LA- As of January 1, 2023, the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA), a Program of the Board of Regents, is accepting applications for the 2023 John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program award. The Bureau of Justice Assistance funds the program. It provides five public defenders and ten prosecutors employed in the state of Louisiana with student loan repayment relief if they meet certain eligibility requirements. Interested individuals can access the online application here.

State and federal public defenders and state prosecutors employed in Louisiana must have been employed a minimum of one year in a qualifying position as of December 31, 2022. If awarded, they must agree to remain employed as a full time prosecutor or public defender for a minimum of three years following receipt of the award. Additional eligibility conditions and restrictions can be found here. 

This year’s total award provided to the State is $84,000.00 (increased from the $39,000.00 total award provided in 2022) and will be disbursed as follows:

The deadline to apply for relief is April 30, 2023. Applicants must sign and return the Service Level Agreement to be considered for the award. Failure to respond will result in elimination from consideration. Interested applicants with questions or concerns should contact sgsp@la.gov.
